Playground Equipment
Home Playground Equipment is defined as any product in which the support structure remains stationary while the activity is taking place and is intended for a child to perform any of the following activities: climbing, swinging, sliding, rocking, spinning, crawling, or creeping, or combination thereof.
Home playground equipment meant for indoor use, such as a small slide, may be considered a children’s toy, and would need to meet the U.S. Toy Safety Standard, ASTM F963-17 in addition to phthalates testing requirements and other children’s product requirements discussed above.
Home playground equipment meant for outdoor use only is not considered a toy and is not subject to the ASTM F963-17 Toy Standard, but would need to meet the children’s product requirements discussed above. Manufacturers and importers of outdoor home playground equipment will want to review the CPSC’s Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook.
Public Use Playground Equipment is defined as a play structure for use in play areas of schools, parks, child-care facilities, institutions, multiple-family dwellings, private resorts and recreation developments, restaurants, and other areas of public use. Please review the CPSC’s Public Playground Safety Handbook. There are no specific mandatory requirements for public playground equipment other than the generally applicable children’s product requirements discussed above.
